Michael Phelan, a native of Beaumont, TX, has immersed himself in the art world for over two decades, initially carving his path as a contemporary artist based in New York City. A graduate of RISD and Brown University in Providence, RI, Phelan exhibited his works extensively across the US and Europe, earning a place in prestigious collections and gaining recognition in leading global publications such as Artforum, Frieze, and Vogue Italia. Notably, his artistic journey led him to Marfa, TX, the iconic town transformed by Minimalist pioneer Donald Judd.
Taking ownership of Marfa's original 'Texaco' Station, Phelan transitioned into the role of curator and founded the Marfa Invitational, aiming to present contemporary artists within the historical context of Marfa. The Invitational, inaugurated in Spring 2019, attracted prominent galleries like Marianne Boesky, Half Gallery, Nino Mier Gallery, and Lora Reynolds Gallery, marking a significant milestone in the global art scene. As Marfa Invitational continues to redefine the traditional institutional model, Phelan envisions its evolution into a leading global space for contemporary art and culture. With an expanded focus on art, architecture, design, film, fashion, and performance, Phelan seeks to provide context to exhibited art forms, enhance the human experience, and foster a deeper connection between individuals and the diverse artistic expressions that surround us.
