Simon du Pury, a luminary in the art world, carved a distinctive path that spanned various roles within the auctioning and advisory realms. Originating from Switzerland, he initially pursued a career in art as a student of Japanese painting techniques at the Tokyo University of the Arts in the 1970s. However, faced with challenges in gaining recognition as an artist in New York City, he transitioned to the world of auctions. His tenure at Sotheby's, where he held key positions such as chairman of Sotheby's Switzerland and chief auctioneer worldwide, marked a significant chapter in his career. Post-Sotheby's, he co-founded an art advisory company, merged it with Phillips Auctioneers, and later established his private consultancy, dePurydePury.
Beyond his professional achievements, Simon du Pury is widely acknowledged for his philanthropic contributions, having raised substantial funds for charities and cultural institutions throughout his career. He has been an active charity auctioneer for causes such as amfAR, Elton John AIDS Foundation, and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. His cultural impact extends to film and television, with appearances in documentaries, French films, and notable TV series such as "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" and "Emily in Paris." Fluent in several languages, he has conducted auctions in English, French, German, Italian, and occasionally Russian.
